Lactate Plus Compared to Lactate Pro

The following are some charts based on an Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) study published in 2010 in the European Journal of Applied Physiology. The study compared the Lactate Plus with the Lactate Pro analyzer. The study showed that these two analyzers were both extremely accurate.

There are differences between the two analyzers. The Lactate Plus is considerably less expensive than the Lactate Pro. We currently sell it for $280 with a one-year warranty. Strips are $46 per vial of 25, or less if one buys several vials. Results are available in 13 seconds compared to 60 seconds for the Lactate Pro.

In addition, the Lactate Plus has much more memory (130 values versus 20), can capture data with date and time, and has strips that last much longer than any other portable Lactate Analyzer (usually between 18 months and 2 years). These products are usually shipped the same day the order comes in and normal shipping is three day service in the US and priority shipping outside the US. The Lactate Plus is manufactured in the US by the largest manufacturer of lactate testing instruments in the world.

The following six charts show the results of reliability and validity testing done in this AIS study. First a study comparing the Lactate Plus directly with the Lactate Pro.

Next the two analyzers were compared to a lab instrument, Radiometer ABL 700 blood gas analyzer. The chart below shows the correlation of the Lactate Plus and Lactate Pro with this instrument.

In another part of the study, each analyzer was compared to another analyzer of the same type to assess inter-analyzer reliability. In other words, will you get consistent results using different analyzers of the same brand? The results for both Lactate Plus and Lactate Pro indicate that results are comparable so long as the same brand of meter is used over time and for all athletes being compared.

The correlation between one Lactate Plus and another Lactate Plus meter was .991. This indicates that a researcher or coach can be sure that the results from the analyzer will be similar to another analyzer of the same type. There will always be tiny fluctuations but the researcher can be assured that the overall pattern is accurate

The Lactate Pro showed similar types of results: the correlation derived for the two instruments of the same type is extremely high.

Both these results show high correlations and indicate the repeatability of readings from both instruments.
