This bibliography is not represented as complete. For examnple, it was last updated in 2014. However, we are not aware of any major study done since that time.
All but a few references are in English and much work on lactate testing and metabolism has been published in other languages. Also there may be publications that escaped our notice, and articles that have been published too recently to be included. We will gladly add to this list any references that you suggest and we agree are appropriate.
The bibliography has been divided into three sections. The first provides two complete lists of all 5000 + references, one arranged by author and one arranged by year. The second section lists more than 3000 of the references that are in major sports medicine journals, organized by the journal in which they appear.
The third section section breaks down the references into 34 different classifications, grouped into two broad classes: "Theory and Metabolism" and "Testing and Sports". These classifications are not meant to be definitive and some of the distinctions may be arbitrary. We expect to modify them as we analyze them further and receive comments from others. A large number of references could be placed under several classifications. For example, where does an article about the effect of altitude training on the anaerobic capacity of runners belong?
Also some of the lists may not seem to be directly related to lactate but we have included several references because they are about topics that are often associated with lactate metabolism or lactate testing. For example, many researchers and practitioners recommend measuring heart rates and perceived effort in addition to or as alternatives to lactate testing. Also hormones have been associated with the stimulation of the glycolytic process, the source of lactate. Caffeine ingestion can affect athletic performance and lactate levels during exercise. Thus, several references are included on all these topics, including several review articles
