We owe a lot to the help and support of Chris Carabello who worked hard to make this event happen. Here is the announcement he made during the halftime of the game. The pictures following this were taken in the middle of the field at Springfield HS.

"Ladies and gentlemen, may I direct your attention to the center of the field.

In 1957, the La Salle College High School football team, under the direction of the legendary John “Tex” Flannery, “ ran the table” on their Catholic League opponents and finished with a perfect 8-0 record and the right to represent the Philadelphia Catholic League in the City Championship Game.

On December 7, 1957, the Explorers battled Roxborough High School, the Cinderella team of the year, at Franklin Field for the coveted title. Roxborough drew first blood when they intercepted a pass and ran it back 24-yards for a touchdown. The Explorers took over the scoring from that point forward with a touchdown pass from Paul Aita to John Herrera and two touchdown runs from Scotty Maxwell. La Salle went on to win its second City Championship in three years by a score of 19-6.

Earlier this evening, the Class of 1958 held a reunion at La Salle, which included members of this championship team. The team gathered to commemorate the 50-Year Anniversary of this athletic milestone and to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of La Salle College High School.

Tonight, we are joined by twelve members of that Championship team along with two of their coaches. Please join Brother Richard Kestler, President of La Salle College High School and Principal Joe Marchese, as we acknowledge these men.

The La Salle Community wishes Coach Tex Flannery a speedy recovery. Tex wishes that he could be with us this evening.

We are joined by Assistant Coach John Di Sangro and Assistant Coach John Harbison.

Underclassman on that team included:

LB #47 Barry Dunleavy
DE #49 Bob Smith
DB #28 Fred Shaughnessy
OT Frank Yanessa
The Seniors were:
LB/FB #51 John Gallagher
QB #22 Al Solecki
T #57 John Osborne
T #58 Harry Eustace
QB #27 Paul Aita
G #54 Joe Sharpe
E #38 Connie Cunningham

We are honored to have joining us this evening the Outstanding Athlete for the Class of 1958. He caught a 14-yard pass for La Salle’s first touchdown in the City Championship game and was the League’s MVP. He is also the first La Salle athlete to play on a City Championship Football and Baseball Team. He wore number 24 and they called him the "Flash." Running Back John Herrera.

Ladies and gentlemen, the 1957 City Championship Football Team.

"

Joe McNichol was at the reception prior to the game but not at the half time ceremony.
